Living on the West Coast, you become very familiar with the term, "Marine Layer." Marine Layer clouds are low altitude clouds that form over the Pacific Ocean. As the temperatures heat up in Spring and Summer, the ocean still stays relatively cold. Warm air in the summer months traps the cold air above the surface of the water and TA-DA - a marine layer forms. These low clouds and fog typicaly clear up in late morning or afternoon, but sometimes can stick around for days on end.

As a new grad student at the University of Oregon in Eugene, OR, I was thrilled to be living only 45 minutes away from the beach (ahem, the Coast). One sunny and warm Saturday, I put on my bathing suit, packed up my car with beach chair, cooler, a good book, and headed for the beach (ahem, the Coast). About 45 minutes later, a low layer of gray clouds and chilly breeze greeted me. The temperature had dropped about 20-degrees, and the weather did not match the sunny day in the Willamette Valley. I saw people walking the beach bundled up in windproof rain jackets! Determined to enjoy my beach day, I plopped down in my beach chair and dug out my bok. About three minutes later, I had full body goosebumps. I tightly wrapped my beach towel around my body, froze for about 20 more minutes and then booked it to the car and blasted the heat all the way home.
